History of the Institute

The Institute was established in January 2002 when CMR International became a limited company (The Centre for Medicines Research International Ltd). The initial role of CMR International in 1981 was to provide a forum for addressing public policy and regulatory issues that impact on efficient drug development. Later, the Centre developed its unparalleled expertise in collecting and analysing metrics on the pharmaceutical industry and medicines research for which it is renowned.

When the decision was made to transform CMR International’s work on metrics into a business there was concern that the Centre’s unique expertise in regulatory policy should not be lost.

The Institute was founded to continue the important role of providing a neutral forum in which senior executives from pharmaceutical companies, representatives from government regulatory agencies and academic institutions can discuss current issues in an open-minded, intimate, and interactive environment.

Today, the Institute is an independent, not-for-profit division of the Healthcare and Science business of Thomson Reuters, with its own dedicated management and funding from membership dues.
